Build your first lesson with AI

To build your first lesson with AI, you describe what you want to teach, shape a plan together with the AI planner, and then generate the content for every activity. At the end you have a lesson whose activities are filled in and ready to review.

Before you start: you need a teacher account with AI lesson generation enabled. If you can't start an AI lesson, ask your administrator to check your access.

Describe the lesson

  1. Start a new lesson. A new, empty lesson is created for you, and you land on an entry screen where you describe it.

  2. Write what you want to teach. Include the topic, the grades, and the language of the lesson. The lesson's subjects, grades and language are filled in automatically from your profile where possible, and the lesson language defaults to your own. You can say in your message if you want something different.

  3. Send your message. The planning screen opens with the AI planner chat next to the plan.

The planner may ask follow-up questions. They appear as a short form you answer, or as suggested replies you can tap. The first suggested reply is the one the AI recommends. Tapping any of them sends it as your answer. Suggestions disappear once you reply or the planner says something new.

As the planner works, you see short progress lines in the chat, such as "Updating the basics", "Drafting learning goals", "Writing guidelines" and "Building the outline". The matching section of the plan fills in on the page as it goes, so you don't need to refresh.

You can keep chatting at any time. The message box says "Ask me to add or change anything in the plan", so ask for changes in plain language, for example "add a warm-up activity" or "make the goals simpler."

If you see "Something went wrong. Your message wasn't sent.", click Retry in the bar above the chat to send the same message again.

Checkpoint: the plan shows your basics, learning goals and an outline of activities, and the chat shows the steps the planner completed.

Review the plan

Read through the plan before you generate anything. Everything the AI wrote is editable.

  • Change it by chatting. Ask the planner to add, remove or rewrite goals, guidelines or outline items.
  • Edit it directly. On the lesson page that lists the activities, you can edit each activity's fields inline, drag activities to reorder them, delete one you don't need, or add a new activity with the dashed add button below the list. You can also attach documents to the lesson from the same page.

The plan has to be complete before you can generate. If something required is missing, generation won't start. Ask the planner to fill in the gap, or fill it in yourself.

When the plan looks right, click Generate lesson on the planning screen. If you are on the lesson page instead, use the Start Generation bar. It is available once the lesson has at least one activity.

Prefer to build it yourself?

You don't have to generate the content. On the lesson page, use the option to create the lesson manually. You'll be asked to confirm, and then you get the regular lesson editor with your outline's activities in place, ready for you to fill in.

Checkpoint: you have an outline you're happy with, and you've either started generation or chosen to build manually.

Generate and retry

After you start generation, you're taken to a progress view for that job. The AI generates the content for every activity in the lesson and also enhances the lesson's documents. Longer lessons with more activities have more to produce, so they take longer. Keep the page open to watch progress.

A few things to know:

  • Only one job at a time. If a generation job for the lesson is already queued or running, you can't start a second one. Wait for it to finish.
  • Generation only runs on a lesson in Planning. This means none of its activities has content yet. If you've already generated, or your activities already have content, you'll see a message saying so.
  • If a job fails, the lesson goes back to Planning. Your plan and activities are kept, so you can start generation again from the lesson page with Start Generation. If it keeps failing, ask the planner to simplify the outline, or choose to create the lesson manually.

Checkpoint: the job finishes and each activity in your lesson has content. Open the activities one by one to review and edit them before you assign the lesson to your class.
