Assign a lesson or activity to a class
Assigning sends a lesson, an activity, or lessons from a course to a class (or to a link), with a due date and grading settings. The steps below walk through the assignment window from start to finish.
Before you start
- You need a teacher account and at least one active class. Classes you can assign to are listed in the window.
- The content you want to assign should already exist as a lesson, a standalone activity, or a lesson inside a course. If you assign something that is still a draft, it is published for you automatically.
Start the assignment
Open the assignment window from the place you are working. Where you start decides what happens first:
- You start from a specific lesson or activity. The window opens with that item already chosen and takes you straight to the assignment details.
- You start without choosing content. The window opens on a content selection step, where you pick what to assign.
Pick content
On the content selection step you see rows of your courses, lessons, and standalone activities.
-
Use the search box to find content by title. You can also narrow the list with the subject and grade filters.
-
Switch between All, By subject, and By grade to change how lessons are grouped.
-
Click a lesson or an activity card to select it. Click it again to remove it.
-
To assign lessons from a course, click the course card to open it, then tick the lessons you want. This is how you assign a whole course lesson. Only courses that contain lessons appear.
You can select several items. When you select more than one item, or more than one class, the window creates one assignment for each item and class pair. Before it creates anything, it shows a preview of what will be created. There is a maximum number of assignments you can create at once, and the window tells you if your selection goes over it.
Choose class and students
- Choose who the assignment is for:
- A class. Select the class you want. The class list shows each class with its subject and student count.
- A public link. Choose the public option instead of a class if you want anyone with the link to be able to join.
- For a class assignment, decide which students receive it:
-
Leave the assign-to-all toggle on to give the assignment to everyone in the class. The number of students is shown next to the toggle.
-
To assign to selected students only, turn the toggle off. A checklist of the class roster appears. Tick each student who should receive the assignment. A counter shows how many you have selected.
The checklist shows students whose enrollment is active or approved. If no students appear, no one is enrolled in that class yet.
When you select several items or several classes, the assign-to-all and student checklist options are not shown, because the assignment goes to each class as a whole.
-
Set title and grading
Fill in the assignment details:
- Title. Give the assignment a name your students will recognize.
- Instructions. Add any notes students should read before they start.
- Dates and attempts. Set the start date and the due date, or choose to have no due date. You can also set how many attempts students get and whether late submissions are allowed.
- Delivery. Choose whether students complete the work on their own time or in a scheduled live session. Scheduled live is not available for adaptive content. When you pick a live time, the start date is set automatically to shortly before it.
- Grading method. Choose one of two options:
-
Weighted average: the score is calculated from students' results on the activities.
-
Completion: students are graded on whether they finished.
The grading method choice appears when you assign a single activity. It is not shown for lessons.
When everything looks right, create the assignment.
-
What happens next
After you create a single assignment, a success screen opens. It shows the shareable join link for the assignment, so you can copy it and send it to students. If the assignment is a live session starting soon, the screen also offers a way to start the live session right away.
For a bulk assignment, the success screen reports how many assignments were created, and you can open the details to review them.
Students in the class see the assignment on their own screen. To change anything later, open the assignment and edit it.
